This era of golf has yet to be defined, but I am going to go with the "Era of Uncertainty." Following the era of Tiger Woods dominance we have now watched 13 different players claim the last 13 majors.
Watching the Memorial is a reminder that we can't depend on any one player to surge ahead of the pack on a consistent basis. There were times when Tiger or Phil were in the field players were playing for second. With Tiger struggling to regain his form and Mickelson playing during the twilight of his PGA career is there a player who will take the lead? I don't see it. I look at the top #1 ranked players in the world over the past couple of years...Luke Donald (0 majors), Rory McIlroy (1 major), Lee Westwood (0 majors), and Martin Kaymer (1 major). Then you look at the Top 10 ranked golfers in the world...if you take out Tiger Woods you have a whopping total of two majors won amongst them...and Bubba Watson just joined that list...prior to his Masters Victory that number would have been 1. One stinking major out of the Top 10 ranked golfers in the world...minus Mr. Woods. There are a lot of good players playing professional golf...but none right now that are anywhere near great. |

I still think McIlroy is going to win 6 majors in his career, even with what's happened the last few weeks. You don't win a US Open by 8 shots, and at such young of an age without building on that. Rickie Fowler though is starting to look more and more impressive though. Even with only 1 win, he's got a ton of Top 5 finishes at 23 and has contended in a major. I had predicted 2 major wins for him prior to Quail Hollow, now I wouldn't discount 4. Louis Oosthuizen's a few years older than them, and when he gets hot, he's unbeatable for a stretch of time. Won the British a couple years ago in a runaway, and you can make the argument that he should have won the green jacket a couple months ago. I say he ends with 3 majors in total, adding 2 more to what he already has. Other than those guys, I'm not willing to put much stock in anyone real young until we see a bit more of Patrick Cantlay, Matteo Manassero, and Jordan Spieth. FTR I think Ryo Ishikawa will be a Ryan Leaf or JaMarcus Russel of golf.
We all know we're not going to see anyone like Tiger or Jack for years and years. They're once in a century type players. I don't know if I'll see anybody reach Tiger's 14 majors by the time I'm on my death bed in 70 years. |

Agreed, no one has emerged, but that doesn't mean they won't. Also, we need to re-calibrate after the dominance Tiger showed over the last 14 years, which was very unusual. Even the dominance by Jack Nicklaus was punctuated by periods where there were many other guys winning majors. Guys he played with like Player, Watson, Miller, Trevino, and Ballesteros were no slouches when it came to winning majors.

I've been convinced for some time that "The Next Jack" is under ten years old, and living somewhere in Asia.

If you are looking for another dominate player then "Era of Uncertainty" would be appropriate. However in my opinion this is really an exciting time to watch golf. Instead of a limited number of players who could win each week, that number has now been expanded. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.
